In winter sports, I take the "green" trails
Ski holidays have a significant impact on the environment. But by adopting some reflexes, it is possible to limit the damage.
To enjoy the pleasures of the snow without damaging the mountain, you have to think about every aspect of your stay.
"In terms of carbon footprint, the most important emissions related to ski holidays are those generated by transport between the home of vacationers and their holiday resort," said Marc-Jérôme Hassid, director of Cipra France (International Commission for protection of the Alps). It is therefore better to turn to stations that have railway stations, such as Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (Haute-Savoie), or shuttles from the nearest town, to limit the pollution peaks that some alpine valleys are customary.
RESPECT THE ECOSYSTEMS
Once you have selected one or two destinations, you have to look at housing. "In Savoie, for example, we build a lot of cottages that nibble land on agricultural land, and some buildings are true thermal sieves," said Marc-Jerome Hassid.
To preserve the terroir's richness and limit energy waste, you can switch to a collective accommodation or a renovated old chalet.
Then all you have to do is sift through your winter recreation: off-piste skiing, snowshoeing, signposted routes?
"In France, since 2004, a moratorium exists on the use of additives for artificial snow, and the water is thus returned to the natural environment without pollution," notes the association Mountain
Riders in his Eco-guide mountain resorts. However, in areas that sometimes lack water, punctures made for artificial snow can further weaken ecosystems. As for snow-covered areas, too much to frequent them can harm wildlife, especially if there are protected species. Thus, before planning to ski off the slopes (even close to the domain) or go snowshoeing to discover the local nature. it is better to inquire.
